August 2012

Hey, good morning!

If there could be one word used to describe me this year, it would be late. Seriously, I don't think I took on an overabundance of projects, but for some reason or another I'm always behind the eight ball. So like everything else this year, this ezine is late. LOL

What's been happening? For one, I began booking online workshops for next year. I took a very aggressive approach so I could get some of my popular workshops out, but also could write some new material. I'm doing one on characters now. It's almost a new subject for me. So it should interest a lot of you who've liked my other workshops.

I've been writing a workshop on keeping tension alive in romance novels WITHOUT sex in them that I'm giving for Savvy Authors beginning September 10. I'll put a link for that in the Coming Attractions segment.

My son was in the hospital. My niece got married. I wrote a book -- actually a really great book about a mom with triplets. Writing the kids was almost as much fun as writing the romance! My big computer died and I had to make friends with this laptop! LOL

Things have been so busy that I haven't even played golf much this year.

I'd say I'm hoping for an easier fall, except my son is getting married in Colorado in September. I'm having a shower for his fiancee at the house the week before. So...it's gonna be another busy month.

But at least the wedding stuff will be fun.

In October I'm doing live workshops for Pennwriters in Bloomsburg, Sisters in Crime in Confluence, and attending NINC in New York.

In November, I'm on a panel for a Pennwriters day-long event in Pittsburgh. This one is all about publishing options. CJ Lyons will be there, as well as Jane Friedman. Jane, as most of you know, worked for Writers Digest and became a known authority on publishing. She has a great blog and lots of knowledge about all the options out there.

So I have a fun-busy September with my son's wedding. A busy October with workshops and a conference. And a busy November.

I certainly won't be bored.

But to get back to August...this month saw the release of Nanny for the Millionaire's Twins. Sara from Harlequin Junkie gave it a 5-star review, which thrilled me because if a writer were allowed to choose one favorite book this one would rank right up there.

The hero, of course, has twins, but the heroine was injured in a motorcycle accident and is fighting her way back to real life after five years of recovery. It's funny. The kids are adorable. It's sweet. The heroine finds herself in love with the babies in about two minutes. And the hero is perfect.

Even though it's late (been a while since the release date...LOL) I hope you pick up a copy...or grab it for your Nook or Kindle.

So happy end of August, everyone. And happy September.

Writing the 3-Book Series

Book 1 Setup

     Most of you know me as a category romance author, but just like you, I’m also a reader! In my over forty years of reading and nearly thirty years of writing, I’ve discovered that when it comes to writing a 3-book mini-series the rules are very much the same for both single title and category romance.
     So grab a cup of coffee or tea and let’s start with discussing Book 1, Setup.
     All books have the potential to spin into series that could run forever, only requiring the use of the same characters, the same setting, the same “vehicle” (such as a detective agency, a SEAL team, knitting supply store). But in this 3-article workshop we’re going to discuss the strong, well planned 3-book series that has an overarching story that connects the books and must be resolved in the final book.
     To me there are only two hard and fast rules for a 3-book series:
1. Each book must stand alone.
2. Each book must also contain a few pieces of the puzzle for the overarching “series” story without letting the series story take over.
This is why I believe the best series are planned in advance! You don’t want secondary characters running away with a book that belongs to a specific hero and heroine.   You don’t want the series story to overshadow the individual book’s story.
The easiest way to keep the series story under control is to remember that Book 1 is the series set up. Book 2 carries the series story forward. Book 3 is the series wrap up. Then give each series character a “role” in each book, but not much more.
So what does a setup look like?
As Book 1 “setup” tells the story of a specific hero and heroine, it also sets up a main problem or trouble that will be carried through the three books, and introduces the interesting characters who will populate the books, including either the hero or the heroine (sometimes both, but not always) for each of the three books.
As practically as possible you should work to get in not just each character’s “look” but also his or her personality.
In the BABY IN THE BOARDROOM series, the half-brothers meet when their father, a carousing Greek shipping magnate, dies. He doesn’t just leave them with a company on the skids; he also leaves them with another half-brother. And Gino is a baby.
In the first chapter, at the reading of the will, we meet Darius, Cade and Nick. Darius, the hero of the book, gets a POV. Even as he’s reeling from the bequests in their father’s will, he’s sizing up the heroine, who has joint custody of Gino with him.
The ROMANCE gets a front-and-center role in chapter 1 because this is a category romance. The conflict is introduced. They are joint custodians of a baby when Darius isn’t accustomed to sharing anything. Or being told what to do.
After all the bad news is given, including that there is a fifth shareholder, a former secretary who holds her stock in trust to remain anonymous, Darius asks for privacy to discuss all this with his brothers. (NOTE: A secretary who holds her stock in trust to remain anonymous? Does anyone smell heroine for a future book? In the setup book, facts are peppered in. Not dumped. Clues are dropped to build the “series” story the same way you would build the main story of each book.)
When they are alone, Nick and Cade get the chance to speak and readers get a taste of each of their personalities by what they say and how they phrase things. I don’t spend a lot of time on them, just enough to show readers who they are. After all, this is only an introduction. This is still chapter one of book one and DARIUS’S story!
But we DO see that Nick and Cade aren’t happy that the will appoints Darius as the shipping company’s Chairman of the Board and CEO. He gets custody of the baby who also gets a vote on the board, which Darius gets to cast for him as his guardian. He also gets the family estate in Montauk – because he’s the oldest.
We also recognize that Cade and Nick could potentially dislike Darius for an even more basic reason. He’s the only son born in wedlock. Darius’s mom was the only woman Stephone Andreas married. So Nick and Cade harbor more than a little bit of resentment. They do not intend to simply fall in line. And they leave Darius to handle it all alone. He’s the CEO and Chairman. He’s Gino’s guardian. The will says it all. He gets to do all the work and they’ll happily collect profits, once he gets everything running smoothly again.
But Stephone’s will also charges the brothers to unite at the risk of losing the fortune he left them. Particularly since the former secretary owns 1/3 of the stock while each of them owns only 1/6. If they don’t unite, this former secretary could come in and take over the company. Yet, here we are, chapter 1, book 1, with the brothers walking out on Darius.
Even at that early point, the set up for the three books is clear. Three brothers will find the loves of their lives while struggling to get to know each other, get along, save their father’s company and find the missing shareholder.
Eventually, Whitney will convince Darius that he must be the one to make the effort to get along with his stubborn brothers. When Nick softens to Darius and recognizes the difficulty he’s having trying to fix a dying company, we see the beginnings of the bonds being formed. We also see Nick isn’t such a bad guy! (Which causes readers to like him enough he’s a shoo-in for hero for book 2!)
But Cade isn’t such an easy guy to rein in. He’s a Texas oilman rancher, who lost the love of his life to death the year before. He’s grouchy, surly. He doesn’t give a flying fig if their disgusting dad’s company folds. The very fact that he holds out on learning to get along keeps the tension going. So that that story thread remains an issue in book 2.
Piece of cake. And lots of stuff to work with to make all three of the books interesting and exciting!
Since it’s so easy and clear what must be done, what makes writing a series so tricky?
While stringing readers along enough that they want to read the books that follow, each book must stand alone.
Which means the overarching series story cannot overshadow the hero and/or heroine in a category romance or in the bigger, broader story of a single title. No secondary character’s problem can be shown so much or focused on so much that readers groan when their story isn’t resolved. (Though you can give them a sufficient problem that readers see it should be resolved and “hope” for a sequel!) And the hero and heroine must have a separate story that doesn’t depend on the series story. Darius and Whitney’s story is the story of Whitney getting over a life tragedy as they learn to be parents and fall in love. (I’m not going to tell you everything! You have to read the books. LOL)
And that means information about the secondary characters is sprinkled into scenes that pertain to Darius and Whitney’s romance. (In a single title, they would be sprinkled into scenes that pertain to the main story of the single title.)
In book 1, we learn that both Nick and Cade were married. Nick is now divorced. Cade’s wife died and he’s clearly still grieving. I show them impacting scenes of DARIUS AND WHITNEY’S STORY when they finally come to the mansion to see Gino. Nick flirts with Whitney while Cade defends her, asking about Darius’s intentions. Readers don’t just get a taste of Nick and Cade’s personalities, they also form a bond with them, and even hope that they find their own heroines, but not so much that they are disappointed when neither secondary character finds his perfect match within the pages of Darius and Whitney’s book.
     In her bestselling SEAL series for Ballentine, Suzanne Brockman strung readers along with Sam and Alyssa’s story to the point that she actually had Sam marry a woman he got pregnant and cause readers to worry Sam and Alyssa wouldn’t get a story! (Crafty lady!)
But she didn’t do it at the expense of the current story. Because the series was single title, Sam’s pregnancy story was a subplot. In fact, it was a subplot in two books that worked to enhance each of those stories, and continue reader interest in the series as a whole and wonder…Will Sam and Alyssia ever get together?
     Still, it never overshadowed the romance of the hero and heroine or either of the bigger, broader single title stories!
     So that’s how you create book 1, setup. You subtly tell the beginnings of the overarching series story through the romance of the hero and heroine (if you’re writing a category) and through the main story of a single title (thriller, mainstream, mystery, suspense, women’s fiction).
     You create the main characters for the next books (either the hero or the heroine…or sometimes both) and give readers enough information and “personality” for those characters that they are interested in seeing how they find their perfect matches.
     You tie up your story as you would if there was no series story also being told, so that your story is complete. And no one is left hanging. Except that you’ve dropped clues that something about the overarching story isn’t over. It feels done. The conclusion is satisfying. But when book 2 opens and the next phase of the story begins, readers nod knowingly and say, “I thought we weren’t done with that!”

Cat Tale

My cat Sophie is a bit of a nut. She's always believed she was a member of our family. In all my years of having cats, I've never been able to teach one tricks. But Sophie loves tricks. We blink at each other and she mimics the wink or blink I make. It's hysterical. But her cutest trick is the way she runs up the stairs when anyone says, "Do you want to go to bed, Sophie?"

She hasn't been outside much since the neighbors got their dog, but I'm wondering if the dog isn't just an excuse since she's getting older and hunting rodents isn't as much fun as it used to be. LOL!

Nanny for the Millionaire's Twins  


Chapter 1
     Chance Montgomery pulled his SUV up to the big black iron gates that protected his mother’s estate. He punched in the code she’d given him, and, after the gates opened, drove along the winding lane, not surprised that nothing had changed. The leaves on the tall trees that lead to the mansion had turned red, yellow and orange, the way they always did in October in Pine Ward, Pennsylvania. The brown and gray stone mansion, his childhood home, looked exactly as it had on his eighteenth birthday, when he’d run away.
     He’d run because his life was a mess. A rope of days, months and years braided together with betrayal and lies. Ironically, he was returning for the same reason. The woman he’d thought was the love of his life had left him when she realized she was pregnant with his twins. She’d never loved him, only used him as a stepping stone to get where she wanted to be in her career. Nine months later, she’d had their babies and seemed to mother them adequately for six or so months. Then suddenly two weeks ago, she’d brought them to his house and said she didn’t want them back.
Odd that it took her giving up the kids to reinforce the valuable lesson he’d learned when he’d discovered his adoptive father was actually his biological father. People couldn’t be trusted. Most looked out for themselves. He should have remembered that when she told him she’d only been with him to use him. But, no. He’d actually held out hope that even if she didn’t love him, she could love their kids.
He was an idiot.
     He pulled the SUV in front of one of the garage doors, clicked off the ignition and jumped out. As if she’d been waiting for him, his mom hurried over.
     “Chance, darling!” Her snow white hair was cut short in a neat and elegant style. Her black trousers and black turtleneck with pearls made her look like the socialite that she was.
     She enfolded him in the kind of embrace only a mother can pull off without looking foolish. When she stepped away, her eyes were filled with tears. “I’m so glad you’re home.”
     He cleared his throat. He wished he could say the same, but the truth was he wasn’t happy to be here. He wasn’t happy he couldn’t handle his twins. He wasn’t happy his babies’ mother didn’t want to be in their lives. He wasn’t happy that every person in his life hurt him, cheated him or lied to him –
Except Gwen Montgomery. The devoted wife his father had tricked into adopting him. A woman who, even once she’d found out he was her husband’s bastard son, hadn’t stopped loving him.
     “It’s good to be home.”
     Okay. That was a bit of a lie. But how could he tell the happy woman in front of him the truth? That this house reminded him of a dad who couldn’t be trusted. That his life sucked. That he’d lost his faith in humanity—
He couldn’t.
     She clapped her hands together. “So let me see them!”
     He reached for the back door of the SUV just as a tall redhead walked out walked out of the mansion. He would have been lying if he said he didn’t notice her face was pretty. Big brown eyes, a pert nose and full, lush lips always added up to pretty. But she wore a plain white blouse, gray pants and ugly – truly ugly – black shoes.
     His mother said, “By the way, this is Victoria Bingham. She likes to be called Tory. I hired her to be your nanny.”
     Normally, he would have reached over and taken the hand she extended to shake his. Instead, he turned to his mom. “I told you, Mom. I want to raise the kids myself. I came here for help from you, not an outsider.”
     She straightened as if he’d mortally wounded her. “Well, of course, I’ll help you. But you also need a nanny for things like diapers--”
     “I can change diapers. I’ve changed thirty thousand in the past two weeks. These kids were abandoned by their mom. They’re not going to lose their daddy too.”
     Gwen laid her hand on his cheek. “Oh, darling. We are not going to let these kids go without love. You had a nanny until you were four. And you don’t think I love you any less than a baby raised without a nanny, do you?”
     “No.” Gwen’s love had been proven a million times over when she accepted her husband’s infidelity a lot better than Chance had.
     “So, you see? Nannies are perfectly suitable help.”
     He mumbled, “I suppose,” turned to the SUV door, opened it and revealed his two true prides and joy. Little bruiser Sam yelped indignantly as if he resented being stuck in his car seat while everybody else talked. Cindy gurgled happily.
     “Oh, darling! They’re gorgeous!”
    
They were gorgeous.
Standing off to the side, Tory Bingham stared at the two blond-haired, blue-eyed babies. She hadn’t wanted this job. After years of surgeries and the resultant therapies to repair her left leg, which had been shattered in a motorcycle accident, she could finally walk with the support of orthopedic shoes. She could also drive. Her plan had been to spend her days with her fiancĂ©, who hadn’t fared as well as she had after their accident. But her parents had other ideas.
     They wanted her to get a job. Worse, they wanted her to get on with her life. While her fiancĂ© lay in a personal care facility struggling, they wanted her to move on. It wasn’t just ridiculous; it was horrific.
     But she was twenty-five years old. She didn’t have any money. She didn’t have health insurance. All of her medical expenses had been picked up by Jason’s motorcycle insurance, but she was reaching even those limits. Her parents might be friends of the Montgomerys but they didn’t have the money the Montgomery family had. She had no choice but to take the job Gwen had offered.
     But now the prodigal son didn’t want her.
     Fine with her. She would find work somewhere else. Except—
     Well, his babies were adorable. The two sweet angels sitting in bear-print car seats caused an unexpected tumble of her heart, and she couldn’t stop staring at them.
     Chance ducked into the SUV. “Here, I’ll get them out.”
     “That’s okay.” Gwen scurried around the trailer hitched to the back of the SUV – the trailer hauling a big black motorcycle. “You get Sam. I’ll get Cindy.”
     She opened the door and leaned in to get the little girl, but within a few seconds, she pulled out again. “Tory, can you help me with these strap things? I can’t seem to get them unbuckled.”
     Tory said, “Yes, ma’am,” and hurried around the trailer. Apparently she wasn’t being fired after all.
But even staying as far away as she could from the black beast on the trailer, her chest tightened with terror as she maneuvered around it. She remembered her motorcycle accident as something like a soundless blur that flashed into her brain at the oddest times of the day and night. A blur that had all but destroyed her leg and nearly taken the man she loved.
     Gwen said, “Hurry, Tory!”
Tory scooted to the SUV door, dipped in to undo the buckle and found herself six inches away from the most adorable face in the universe. Big blue eyes blinked at her. Cherubic lips blew spit bubbles. “Well, hello, there.”
     The baby gurgled with happiness.
“Aren’t you just the sweetest little thing?” She undid the last buckle and lifted the baby out of her seat.
     For the first time since the accident, Tory’s chest expanded with delight. The baby patted her face and she laughed. But Gwen eagerly waited to hold the little girl and Tory handed her over.
     “Well, my goodness,” Gwen said. “It is a pleasure to meet you, Cindy. I’m your grandmother.”
     Tory’s eyebrows rose. Gwen had never met her own grandchildren? She knew Chance had been away for a while, but she’d thought they’d reconciled.
     Gwen walked around the trailer again. “Come on. Let’s get them into the house.”
     “Actually, Mom--” Chance winced. “One whiff of Sam and I can tell he needs to be changed. Maybe we should just take them directly to the cottage?”
     His mom’s face fell. “Oh.”
     “It’s been a long drive and once I change them I should feed them.”
     Gwen smiled as if she was so happy to have her son home she would agree to anything. “Okay. Tory and I will come with you.”
     He glanced over at Tory and she looked back at him. She’d already noticed he was tall and lean. That his hair was black and his eyes were blue. That a red flannel shirt suited him and so did butt-molding jeans. But holding the gaze of his blue eyes, she saw other things. Subtleties. Those pretty sapphire eyes had the wariness of a man who didn’t trust.
Which was just perfect. She hadn’t ever worked fulltime beyond the job of watching the kids of working parents for three summers when she was in high school, and her first nanny job came with a distrustful father.
     Well, she wasn’t going to beg him to keep her or even defend herself. She didn’t really want to work for a grouch. Especially not a grouch she didn’t know. Nannies lived with the family who employed them. If he kept her, she’d be spending twenty-four hours a day with a grouch.
     “Just think, Chance,” Gwen said teasingly. “If you have a nanny, you don’t have to get up with the twins in the middle of the night – and, even if you do, you only have to change and feed one baby.”
     He rubbed his hand along the back of his neck, as if bone tired and finding it hard to refute that argument. “All right. You both can come.”
After they strapped the kids into their seats, Tory sat between the twins so Gwen could ride in the front with her son.
As they made their way down the slim brown brick lane that wound through the forest behind Gwen’s mansion, Tory began to see just how private their living arrangements would be. The trees were thick enough that it was nearly dark. Only occasionally did light pierce the red, yellow and orange leafy overhangs and create shiny beams that sparkled to the ground.
She swallowed. Maybe her first instincts had been correct? Maybe she should have held her ground with her mom and told her she didn’t want a job. She wanted to be with Jason, to take care of him, to help him recover. Not trapped in a secluded cottage with a man she didn’t know.

June 2012 ezine


Welcome! Can you believe it's June 1 already? My family and I are preparing for our summer vacation and believe it or not I'm taking work. I have four books with reverted rights that I intend to have up for readers by January 1, 2013. But...more excitingly...I'm prepping some of my workshops to go up as ebooks. They'll be a little cheaper than actually attending the classes, but they also will be classes I will no longer be offering as workshops. They are sort of retiring. :). Plus, having them in book form on your ereader I think will be an easy way to find them. If your office is anything like mine, you'll consider that a blessing.
June 5 THE TYCOON'S SECRET DAUGHTER releases. I'm excited for this book, not just because I love it (though I do :D) but also because it's part of a two-book series that explores what happens when a family has some big secrets. After Max Montgomery goes to work for his rich, ruthless father, he discovers that the baby Brandon Montgomery talked his wife Gwen into adopting is actually Brandon's illigitimate son. So Chance Montgomery, the adopted son, really is a Montgomery. Max really does have a brother.
He loves that until Brandon asks him to keep the secret from his mother...and his brother.
Family secrets can do a lot of damage and Max suffers mightily for his father's sin. So does Chance.
Can this family that has suffered so much at the hands of a ruthless father ever be a family again?
I think you'll enjoy both THE TYCOON'S SECRET DAUGHTER and NANNY FOR THE MILLIONAIRE'S TWINS which comes out in August.
This month there is no Cat Tail. Sadly Fluffy is getting up in years and he's not just camera shy, he's slower and kinda sad. So we're giving him his privacy. And Sophie, well,she's just trouble. So I'm letting her alone too.
But I do have a lesson from one of my writing workshops...Drafting Can Be Fun ... from THIS IS THE YEAR YOU WRITE THAT BOOK! It's a fun reminder that we all got into the writing profession because we loved to write! So we should enjoy writing!

Lesson Three: Drafting Can -- Should -- Be Fun!

Some of the kids in my niece's high school English class have taken on the challenge of writing a novel. Steph told me they were using Chris Baty's book NO PLOT? NO PROBLEM (a low-stress, high velocity guide to writing a novel in thirty days), as their guide. I laughed because I like this book, but in order to write four or five books a year, most category romance novelists can pound out a draft in a week or ten days -- a finished book in a month or two!
But that's part of the problem, isn't it? Some of us aren't that fast. The truth is . . . I'm not. I need three or four weeks to write the draft of a 50,000-word novel. Then I have to revise that draft. Then I have to polish. It takes me six weeks to two months to write the kind of book a lot of other authors can write in three or four weeks!
In the beginning of my career that scared me. I would even sometimes punish myself. When that failed, I created games and tools and systems to try to speed up my process. They all failed.
Then one day after beating myself up for not being as fast as everybody else seemed to be, I realized something remarkable. I don't read as fast as everybody else does either. I also don't shop as fast. Or eat as fast. Or houseclean as fast. I can't run at all -- never could. I'm more of a walker, than a runner. And maybe that's the way my life's supposed to be.
The day that I realized that we don't all vacuum at the same speed, shower in the same amount of time, or bake cookies at the same pace, I also realized that we probably don't all write at the same pace and nothing's going to change that. In fact, some of us might have actually been created to write slowly!
If you are one of those people, pause now, find a mirror and say to yourself… “That's okay.” No. Better than that say, "That's wonderful!"
Why? Because there are some things about ourselves we can't change. It's good to accept them. It's better to embrace them.
If you spend all your writing time trying to be somebody you're not or writing in a way that's unnatural, you'll waste that time. So why not just recognize that you are not perfect, you are you, and get on with the process of writing your book.
And what is that process?
If you're a plotter, you need to have an outline before you sit down to draft. If you're a pantser, you should at least have what I call a story summary. One paragraph that encapsulates your book without giving away any of the good parts so your fun isn't spoiled. Then you simply need to sit down and write.
One of the most freeing moments of my career was when I read Stephen King's confession in ON WRITING that he usually did four or five versions of a book before he got it right. Basically, he wrote his first draft quickly. He (and a few select people) read it. He made notes and gathered comments from his select people and he revised. Then he and his select people read it again. He made notes and gathered the notes of his people, and he revised again. Then he and his people read it again…You get the picture. He did this until the book told the story he wanted to tell.
I remember reading that chapter of the book, turning to my husband with a big grin and saying, "I write like Stephen King." Being the Stephen King fan that he is, he just looked at me. I said, "I do. We both create multiple drafts. So I write like Stephen King." (My husband said, "Right," then went back to his football game. He doesn't get as enthused about writing as I do. He also doesn't read grammar books for fun. There's little to no hope for him.)
Anyway, a draft is a draft. It will not be seen by anybody, unless you give it out to be read. So, promise yourself you won't give it out and then write. Let your characters and story come alive. Let them make mistakes. Let yourself make typos. Put in lines that say things like: KISS HERE, or FIGHT SCENE HERE or TENDER MOMENT HERE instead of agonizing over a paragraph or scene that might be taken out in a later version.
I have a friend who agonizes over every word. One day she called me and said, "I see why you draft the way you do." Knowing she thinks I'm insane, I carefully said, "Really?" and she said, "Yes. I spent two weeks on a chapter, changed something about the end of the book and now the chapter I slaved over doesn't fit anymore. It's being scrubbed. Those two weeks were wasted."
Ah-Ha. My point exactly.
Spit it out. Get it down. Push, push, push, push, push. But get it out of your head and onto the page.


I know this seems a little odd in light of what I said about myself writing slowly. But I'm not suggesting that you write fast. I'm saying you should remember that you are drafting. Don't be picky. Don't be panicky! don't edit. Write!

There will be plenty of time for polishing later. In fact, revisions will come before polishing. Let your words and your sentences and even the "specifics" of some of your scenes hang in the balance in the first version.
Why?
Because we write on three levels. Story, Scene and Word. We tell a story through scenes and build scenes with words.
Your first draft or two should be about story. Making sure you have all the journey steps of the story.
Your next draft or two is about scenes. Believe it or not, scenes are pacing. The types of scenes you choose and the order in which you put those scenes create tension and the sense of movement in your story. So once you have your story figured out, then you should begin making your scenes the best they can be. Getting them in the right order. Making them their most dramatic. Making sure they all have a reason to be in the book.
Words come last. Why polish the grammar of a scene that might get cut? Why work on the structure for a sentence that might change? That kind of time wasting is a lesson in futility and might also be the very reason you find writing so frustrating.
Get your story down.
Get your scenes in order.
Then work on words.
And life/writing will be a lot easier. In fact, the process will actually make sense if you give yourself permission to write a true draft, then organize your story, organize your scenes, dramatize your scenes, then fix your words.
You won't waste time. You won't dramatize scenes that get booted or polish sentences that are cut. You will probably end up with a better book. If nothing else, you will find the joy in drafting again!
And, really, isn’t that what drafting is all about? The joy of telling a story off the top of your head!

THE TYCOON'S SECRET DAUGHTER



Chapter 1

Exiting the elevator in the lobby of Mercy General Hospital, Max Montgomery glanced up and did a double take. The woman leaving the coffee shop looked exactly like his ex-wife.

Petite as Kate had been, wearing blue jeans and a little flowered top that was her style, with thick, shoulder-length sable-color hair that swung when she moved, she had to be Kate.

He shook his head, telling himself that was nuts. His wife had left Pine Valley, Pennsylvaniaalmost eight years ago and he hadn’t seen her since. She’d divorced him through lawyers. Hadn’t answered the letters he’d sent to her parents’ home. Hadn’t even returned to visit as far as he knew. Not even at holidays. That couldn’t be her.

He made his way to the wide glass exit doors and they automatically parted, but curiosity turned him around before he could step out.

The woman now stood in front of the elevator he’d exited, her back to him.

Sensation vibrated through him, the radar he’d always had with her. He’d always known when she was within twenty feet. Always known when she was about to walk into the room. Always known.

It had to be her. The radar never failed.

He took a few cautious steps toward her, but stopped. Even if it was her, why would she want to see him? What would he say? Sorry I screwed up our marriage, but I’m sober now.

Actually, that wasn’t such a bad idea. Of all the people on his twelve-step list, people he needed to make amends with, he’d contacted everyone but her. The person who most deserved his apology.

If it wasn’t her, he’d simply apologize for the mistake.

Either way, he’d be apologizing. No big deal.

He sucked in a breath, crossed the small space between them and tapped on her shoulder.

She turned.

His heart stopped then sped up again. It was her.

His mind flew to the day he’d met her at a pool party at a friend’s house. She’d worn a green bikini that matched her eyes. But though her looks had been what caught his attention, it was her personality that hooked his heart. Sweet. Fearless. Funny. In one short conversation, she’d made him forget every other woman he knew. And now she was here. In front of him.

His heart stumbled. His knees weakened.

But when she realized who’d tapped her, the happily surprised expression on her face crumbled and was replaced by something Max could only describe as a look of horror.

“Max!”

A lump of emotion lodged in his throat. More of their life together flashed through his brain. The way they’d talked till dawn the day of the pool party. The first time they’d kissed. The first time they’d made love. Their wedding day.

He’d thrown it all away for the contents of a bottle.

He cleared his throat. “Kate.”

She motioned with her coffee.“I…Um…I need to get this up to mom.”

This time when his heart up-ended it was with fear for her. “Your mom is here? As a patient?”

“No. No. She’s fine.” She glanced around nervously. “Daddy had a stroke.”

Was that any better? “Oh, my God. I’m sorry.”

“He’s okay.” She looked to the right again. “The stroke was reasonably mild. Prognosis is good.” She tried to smile. “I’ve really gotta go.”

It was the worst moment of his life. Eight years ago, she would have turned to him in this kind of tragedy. Today, she couldn’t stand to be around him. In some respects, he didn’t blame her. But he’d changed. He’d been in Alcoholics Anonymous for seven years. He was sober. And he did realize what he’d lost. But more than that, apologizing, admitting his faults, was part of his twelve-step program.

When the elevator pinged, he caught her arm to prevent her from turning. Electricity crackled through him.

Their gazes caught. His heart swelled with misery. God, how he’d loved her.

She swallowed. “I’ve really gotta…”

“Go. I know. But I need a minute.”

Hospital employees walked out of the elevators behind them. The gathering crowd waiting for the elevator loaded inside.

She glanced around nervously.

Pain skittered through him. She couldn’t even stand to be seen with him. He thought back to the times he’d embarrassed her and the pain became a familiar ache. He’d disappointed so many people.

But that was seven years ago.

And today was today.

He pulled her a few feet away from the elevators. “I have to tell you that I’m sorry.”

Her face scrunched with confusion. “Have to?”

“Yes. It’s part of the program.”

Her eyes lit with recognition. “Oh, twelve steps.”

“Yes.”

She looked at him differently now, closely. “You’re sober.”

He finally let himself smile. He’d wanted to be able to tell her that for seven long years. “Yes.”

Her voice softened. “I’m so glad.”

His chest loosened a bit. Breathing became easier. “I am too.”

An awkward silence stretched between them. He understood. There really wasn’t anything for them to say. He’d ruined their marriage. She’d left him to save herself.

She showed him the two cups of coffee again. “I should get this to my mom before it gets cold.”

Pain radiated out from his heart to his entire body. He’d had this woman. She’d loved him and he’d loved her. She’d been everything to him and he’d driven her away.

Don’t dwell on the past. Focus on the future.

He stepped back. “Yeah. Sure. I’m sorry.”

The bell for the second elevator pinged. The doors swooshed open. Kate turned to get inside, but a little girl raced out.

“Mom! Grandma sent me to find you. She thinks you’re making that coffee.”

Mom?

His knees that had been weakened began to shake. The little girl’s hair might have been the same sable color as Kate’s, but those blue eyes … they were Montgomery eyes.

Pain morphed into shock. Could this be his child? His daughter?

“And who is this?”

Kate’s gaze flicked to his. Her hand fell protectively to the little girl’s shoulder. “This is Trisha.”

His body went stock still. “Short for Patricia?” His beloved grandmother’s name? Why name the little girl after his grandmother if she wasn’t his?

She smiled weakly. Her eyes filled with tears. She whispered, “Yes.”

Damn it.

He had a child. A daughter. And Kate had kept her from him?

He looked at the little girl again. Pain, wonder, curiosity simultaneously burst inside him. Everything in him wanted to touch her. To examine her. To see the beautiful child he’d made.

But anger warred with longing and both of them were wrapped in confusion. Was this why she’d left him? Because she was pregnant? Because she didn’t want him to know his child?

Fury rose, hot and eager for release, but thank God his common sense had not deserted him. With this beautiful little girl standing so sweetly innocent in front of him, he couldn’t out-and-out ask Kate if this was his daughter.


Kate wanted to grab her baby girl and run away. Not because she feared Max. When he was sober, he was a great guy. And right now he was sober. But drunk? He had never hurt her, but he’d ranted and raved, smashed dishes, broken windows. The night she’d made the choice to leave rather than tell him she was pregnant he’d smashed their television and thrown a vase through their front window. She’d known she couldn’t bring a child into that world.

But she’d also realized it wouldn’t be good enough to merely leave him. He had money. He had power. After she had their baby, he’d get visitation, and she wouldn’t be able to control what happened. If he drank around their little girl, or drove her baby girl around drunk, he could kill her. And there would be nothing she could do to stop it, if only because every judge in the county owed his election to the Montgomerys.

That frightening night, standing amid the evidence that his bad behavior was escalating, she’d made the only choice she could make. She’d disappeared.

She swallowed, motioned to the elevator. “We’ve gotta go.”

He hesitated. His gaze slid to their daughter, then returned to her. “Okay.”

She saw the anger in his eyes, and quickly herded their daughter into the elevator. The doors swished closed. Her eyes drifted shut and she expelled a low breath as guilt trembled through her. She had no idea how long he’d been sober. Her parents didn’t travel in his social circle and she lived too far away to hear a rumor.

What if he’d stopped drinking the day after she left? What if she’d kept Trisha away from him for nothing?

“Who was that?”

She opened her eyes to glance down at her daughter. This was neither the time nor the place to tell Trisha that she’d just seen her father, but she knew the time and place were coming soon.

The elevator doors opened. “Let’s go. Gramma’s waiting for her coffee.”

Trisha giggled. “I know. She thinks you’re making it.”

Kate smiled at her sweet, innocent daughter whose world was about to be turned upside down, and headed to her dad’s room. His ‘incident’ had been a few days before. He was awake now, at therapy a good percentage of the day and so eager to get home he was gruff.

“Hey, Daddy,” she leaned in a bussed a kiss on his cheek. “If I’d known you were awake I’d have brought you coffee too.”

Her mom stepped from behind the privacy curtain surrounding the bed. Only as tall as Kate, dressed in jeans and a sleeveless top, with her brown hair cut in a neat short style, Bev Hunter said, “He doesn’t get coffee until the doctor says so.”

Her dad rolled his eyes for Kate, but smiled at his wife. His words were slow and shaky when he said, “Yes, warden.”

Kate hands were every bit as shaky when she gave one of the two coffees to her mom.“Here.”

“Thanks.”She popped the lid, took a sip. “You were gone so long I worried that you’d gotten lost.”

“Not lost.”

“Mommy was talking to a guy.”

Bev’s eyebrows waggled. “Reeee-lly?”

“He wasn’t somebody I wanted to see.” She nudged her head in Trisha’s direction. “But this isn’t the time to talk about it.”

Her mom frowned, then her eyes widened in recognition. “You didn’t?”

“I didn’t do anything. He just suddenly appeared out of nowhere. But July is the month Montgomery Development does their annual physicals.” She squeezed her eyes shut. “I should have remembered that.”

Her mom groaned. “So he was here, and he saw Trisha.”

Kate grabbed a paper cup from her dad’s tray table and handed it to Trisha. “Would you throw this away in the bathroom trash can and then wash your hands?”

Trisha nodded eagerly like the well behaved almost-seven-year-old that she was. When she was gone, Kate said, “I have about thirty seconds. So just let me say Max found me. Trisha came out of the elevator when we were talking. He took one look at her and knew.”

Her mom pressed her hand to her chest. “I knew you shouldn’t have come home!”

“I wasn’t about to desert the two of you when Daddy was so sick.” She squeezed her eyes shut. “Mom, Max is sober.”

Bev took a second to process that then snorted in disgust. “And you’re feeling guilty?” She snorted again.“The man had become violent and was getting worse by the day. You had no choice but to protect your child.”

“But I could have checked on him--”

“You have no idea when he got sober. For all you know, he just went to his first AA meeting last week. This isn’t the time to be second guessing.”

Kate heaved out a sigh.“Okay, but I know Max was angry. If I don’t make the first move to initiate some sort of visitation for him with Trisha, he’ll probably come to the house tonight. Or I’ll be hit with some kind of legal papers tomorrow. Or maybe both.”

Walking out of the bathroom, sweet, trusting, Trish smiled. Kate’s heart sank. If he came to the house, they’d have their talk in front of Trisha. And she didn’t want Trisha to hear her dad was a drunk. Especially when she was too young to understand.

“You know what? I think I better deal with this now.” She faced her mom. “Will you guys be okay for an hour or so without me?”

Her eyes filled with worry, Bev said, “Sure.”

Kate sucked in a breath and turned to her daughter. “You behave for Grandma.”

Trisha nodded and Kate left her dad’s hospital room. She got into her car and drove to downtown Pine Valley. The small city was old, and working to revive itself after the loss of the steel mills in the 1990’s. Buildings from the 1940’s were being renovated. Trees had been planted along the sidewalk on Main Street. Even a few new restaurants had popped up.

She left her car in a non-descript parking garage and headed out. A couple of blocks and two turns took her off the beaten path to the place in the city where the newer, more modern structures stood. She stopped in front of the yellow brick building housing Montgomery Real Estate and Development. Only four stories, it nonetheless had an air of wealth and power. Quiet. Dignified. Understated.

She hesitated. Though Max had been reasonably calm at the hospital, she knew he was angry with her. He had to be. If the tables were turned, she’d be furious with him. So his anger was justified. And she had to admit that.

Maybe it would be better to give him a day or two to get past that? To get his bearings.

Blowing her breath out on a long sigh, she told herself no. If she didn’t meet with him on her terms, they’d meet on his. He’d either come to the house and they’d fight in front of Trisha, or they’d meet in a room filled with lawyers. And she’d really lose because he could afford much better lawyers than she could. If at all possible she had to settle this without lawyers.

She walked through the glass double doors into paradise. Glancing around the remodeled lobby, she took in vaulted ceilings that soared to the roof. Sunshine poured in through huge skylights and fed the potted trees that sat on each side of the two white sofas in the reception area. A polished yellow wood reception desk sat in the center of everything.

The Montgomerys had been wealthy when she’d been married to Max, and she knew their business had grown. But actually seeing the results of that growth was a staggering reminder of their different stations in life.

Fear shivered through her. She’d kept wealthy Max Montomgery’s daughter away from him for seven years –nearly eight if she counted the pregnancy. Though she’d almost called him a hundred times over the years to tell him about Trisha, to give him a chance to be part of her life, every time she’d picked up the phone, she’d remember that night. The smashed television. The shattered glasses from the bar shelf. The broken front window. And she’d been afraid. Not just for herself, but for their daughter. He’d made her afraid. Why should she be the one cowering now, when he’d given her no choice but to leave?

She straightened her shoulders. She would not cower. She would not back down. He’d made this bed. And she would remind him of that. Maybe even ask him if he’d like those details coming out in court if he argued with her over custody or visitation.

Dark brown travertine tile led to the reception desk. The pretty twenty-something redhead manning the station greeted her with a smile. “Can I help you?”

“Yes. I’d like to see Mr. Montgomery.”

She glanced down at a small computer screen. “Do you have an appointment?”

“No. But if you’ll tell him Kate Hunter Montgomery is here. I’m sure he’ll see me.”

The young woman glanced over at Kate with raised eyebrows. Kate stood perfectly still under her scrutiny, knowing exactly what the receptionist saw. A small woman with big green eyes and hair just a little bit too thick to tame. Not exactly the woman everyone would expect to be married to a mogul – a ridiculously handsome one at that. With his black hair, blue eyes and tall, lean body, Max had always been a magnet for women. Beautiful women. And he’d chosen her.

It sometimes still puzzled her. Other times it made her realize that having your wishes come true might be the worst thing that could happen.

The receptionist pressed two buttons on her phone then turned away.

Kate heard only muffled words. Her name. Her description.

Then a wait.

She’d probably called Max’s secretary, who had taken the information to Max.

Ten seconds. Twenty seconds. Thirty seconds.

Her face grew warm, her hands clammy. Surely he wasn’t so angry that he’d refuse to see her?

Memories of being married to a wealthy man came flooding back. His job was important. His place in the community was even more important. Fundraisers. Ribbon cuttings. Balls. Parties.

Always worried she’d say or do the wrong thing.

Never feeling good enough.

Righteous indignation surged in her blood. She was the star project manager at her job in Tennessee. She raised a daughter on her own. If she went to a fundraiser, she contributed. If she went to a ribbon cutting it was for a building she’d helped build.

Good enough?

Hell, yeah. She was good enough. And if Max thought he and his money were going to push her around, he was sadly mistaken.

The receptionist faced her.“I’m sorry, Mrs. Montgomery. You may go up.”

“Actually, it’s Ms. Hunter now.”

The receptionist nodded in acknowledgement. “Take the third elevator in the back of that hall.” She pointed to the left. “By the time you get there, a security guard will be there to punch in the code.”

She walked to the last elevator with her head high. The security guard said, “Good morning, Ms. Hunter.” Proof the receptionist was very good at her job. Punching a few numbers into a keypad, he opened the elevator, motioned her inside and stepped back as the doors closed.

The ride to the fourth floor took seconds. The door swooshed open. More potted trees accented a low, ultra-modern green sofa and chair. A green print rug sat on the yellow hardwood floor.

Sitting at the desk in front of a wall of windows, Max looked up.

Catching him off guard, Kate didn’t see the angry father of her child or the rich mogul. She saw Max. Real Max. Max with his thick, unruly black hair. Max with his easy smile and pretty blue eyes.

The day they’d met he’d stolen her breath and her heart.

Which was another reason why she’d moved across the country rather than simply move out when she’d gotten pregnant. No matter how bad their life, she’d always loved him and he’d always been able to charm her.

She swallowed. Her bravado from the reception area began to fade. But she forced it back to life. She wasn’t here to argue for herself, but for Trisha. To protect Trisha.

He rose from his tall-back, yellow-brown leather chair. “Kate. I have to say I’m kind of surprised.”

“Yeah. Well, I’m not the wimpy girl you married.” There. Best to get that out in the open before they went any further. “We have something to discuss. We’re going to discuss it.”

“Big talk from a woman who ran away.”

“From a drunk,” she said, not mincing words because she knew she’d done the right thing and she wasn’t going to let his good looks and charm suck her in again. Too much was at stake.

“And hitting below the belt, I see.”

“Saying the truth isn’t hitting below the belt. Unless you can’t handle the truth.”

His breath poured out in a long hiss as he motioned toward the green sofa and chair. “I know who and what I am.”

She headed for the chair, not wanting to risk that he’d sit beside her on the couch. “Then this conversation should go very easily. We have a daughter. You’re sober now. And I’m willing to let you spend time with Trisha as long as I’m with you.”

Max lowered himself to the sofa. “With me? I don’t get to see my child alone?”

Her chin lifted again. “No. Not until I trust you.”

Max stared at her. Just as he’d changed over the past eight years, she had too. Gone was his sweet Kate, replaced by somebody he didn’t know. Maybe even somebody he didn’t want to know. Maybe even somebody who deserved the burst of fury he longed to release.

He rubbed his hands down his face. No matter how much he wanted to yell and rail, he couldn’t give into it. Not only had he been at fault for her leaving, but just as drinking didn’t solve anything, neither did losing his temper. Another lesson he’d learned while she was gone.

His voice was perfectly controlled as he said, “I don’t think you’re in a position to dictate terms.”

“I think I am.”

“And I have two lawyers who say you aren’t.”

Her eyes widened with incredulity. “You’ve already called your lawyers?”

“A smart businessman knows when he needs advice.”

“So you think you’re going to ride roughshod over me with lawyers?”

“I think I’m going to do what I have to do.”

She shook her head. “Do you want me to leave tomorrow? Do you want me to hide so far away and so deeply that you’ll never, ever see your daughter?”

Control be damned. “Are you threatening me?”

“I’m protecting my daughter. We play by my rules or no rules at all. I won’t put Trisha at risk.”

“Risk? You have no reason to fear for her. I never hurt you!”

“No you just smashed TV’s and broke windows. You were escalating, Max, and you scared me.”

Guilt pummeled him enough that he scrubbed his hand over his mouth to give himself a few seconds to collect himself. Finally, he said, “You could have talked to me.”

Her face scrunched in disbelief. “Really? Talk to a guy so drunk he could barely stand? And how was that supposed to work?”

“I might have come home drunk, but I was sober every morning.”

“And hung over.”

He sighed. “No matter how I felt, I would have listened to you.”

“That’s not how I remember it. I remember living with a man who was either stone cold drunk or hung over. Three years of silence or lies and broken promises. Three years of living with a man who barely noticed I was there. I won’t sit back and watch our little girl staring out the window waiting for you the way I used to. Or laying in bed worried that you’d wrecked your car because you were too drunk to drive and too stubborn to admit it. Or spending the day alone, waiting for you to wake up because you’d been out all night.”

Fury rattled through him. “I’m sober now.”

“I see that. And I honestly hope it lasts. But even you can’t tell me with absolute certainty that it will. And since you can’t, I stand between you and Trisha. I protect her. She will not go through what I went through.”

Her voice wobbled, and the anger that had been pulsing through his brain, feeding his replies, stopped dead in its tracks. She wasn’t just mad at him. She was still hurting.

She rose and paced to his desk. “Do you know what it’s like to live with someone who tells you they love you then doesn’t have ten minutes in a day for you?”

Max went stock still. This was usually what happened when he apologized. The person he’d wronged had a grievance. It had been so long since he’d had one of these sessions that he’d forgotten. But when Kate turned, her green eyes wary, her voice soft, filled with repressed pain, remorse flooded him. She had a right to be angry.

“I’ll tell you what it’s like. It’s painful, but most of all it’s bone-shatteringly lonely.”

Guilt tightened his stomach. He’d always known he’d hurt her, but he’d never been sober enough to hear the pain in her voice, see it shimmer in her eyes.

And she wanted to save Trisha from that. So did he. But the way he’d protect her would be to stay sober. “I won’t hurt her.”

“You know, you always told me the same thing. That you wouldn’t hurt me. But you did. Every day.” Her voice softened to a faint whisper. “Every damned day.”

He squeezed his eyes shut. “I’m sorry. Really sorry.”

“Right.”

Righteous indignation rose up in him. He’d apologized at least four times. He hated his past as much as she hated his past. But this time she wasn’t innocent.

“Did you ever stop to think that maybe I’d have gotten sober sooner if I’d known I was having a child? Did you ever stop to think that if you’d stayed, I might have turned around an entire year sooner?”

“No.” She caught his gaze. “You loved me, Max. I always knew it. But I wasn’t a good enough reason for you to get sober. I wasn’t taking a chance with our child.”

“You could have at least told me you were pregnant before you left.”

“And have you show up drunk at the hospital while I was struggling through labor? Or drunk on Christmas Day to ruin Trisha’s first holiday? Or maybe have you stagger into her dance recital so she could be embarrassed in front of her friends?” She shook her head. “I don’t think so.”

The picture she painted shamed him. Things he’d done drunk now embarrassed him as much as they had his friends and family. And he suddenly understood. Making amends with Kate wouldn’t be as simple as saying he was sorry. He was going to have to prove himself to her.

He blew his breath out on a sigh, accepted it, because accepting who he was, who he had been, was part of his recovery. “So maybe it would be good for you to be around when I see her.”

Her reply was soft, solemn.“Maybe it would.”

“Can I come over tonight and meet her?”

“I was thinking tomorrow afternoon might be a better idea. I take my mom to the hospital everyday but lately Trisha’s been bored. So I thought I’d start bringing her home in the afternoon.”

“And I can come over?”

“Yes. Until my dad is released from the hospital, we’ll have some privacy.”

With that she turned and headed for the elevator. Prickling with guilt, he leaned back on the sofa. But when the elevator doors swished closed behind her, he thought about how different things might have been if she’d told him about her pregnancy, and his anger returned.
